How about food?

The registration fee covers food served at the field station. We employ a local cook to prepare a standard Greek menu every day. A vegetarian option is available.

For those who wish to take an evening out, there are several nice restaurants and family taverns available in Ano Pedina, offering meals at prices of 15-25€/person.

There is no supermarket or bakery in Ano Pedina. Personal food and drinks are best obtained beforehand at Ioannina. Nevertheless, shopping trips can be organized to Kalpaki, 17 km away, which does have a supermarket and bakery.

Who else is coming?

The school is open to postgraduate students or anyone who has completed a postgraduate degree. A total of 15 students will be selected on a competitive basis. In order to maintain the international character of the Greek Summer School the organizing committee will ensure that a variety of countries are represented.

Accommodation?

We are all staying where the course is held, at our stylish PALASE field station of the University of Ioannina, which is a former school located at the edge of the small village of Ano Pedina. The station can accommodate up to 45 people comfortably so there will be plenty of room for our summer school with no more than 20 students. The lecture theatres, laboratories and dining hall are on the ground floor, while the spacious, shared dormitories and the bathrooms with showers are upstairs. Bed linen and blankets are provided, and the rooms are cleaned daily. A washing machine is available. Bring your own towels.

What to bring?

The weather is usually nice this season of the year, but nights in June can be chilly, especially at the higher altitudes. You would need light and warm clothes for the mountain, as weather is unpredictable.

In order to ensure your safety in the mountains, it is obligatory to bring the following with you. Students without this equipment will not be allowed to take part in the field sessions:

  • Mountaineering shoes.
  • Rucksack  (sac-a-dos) for hiking.
  • Warm clothes for the mountains, gloves, cap.
  • Raincoat.
  • Hat, sunglasses, sun-protection cream.

Besides, it is useful to take with you

  • Binoculars
  • Torch
  • Field guides for birds, butterflies, plants etc.
  • Laptop (we will need one laptop per 2-3 students)
  • Finally, take your swimsuit. There are natural pools for brave swimmers!
Seaside Holiday?

Epirus is situated in North Western Greece. If you wish to take some extra holiday time while in Greece or find the rugged splendour of Zagori just too intense, there are plenty of nice beach holiday places too. From Ioannina you can quickly reach the beautiful western coasts of Parga, Preveza, Syvota, (90-130km from Ioannina) and also the beautiful Ionian islands of Corfu, Paxoi, Lefkada.
